Daft Punk - Discovery
(Virgin)
When the formula for creating top-notch pop/dance music comes naturally, it is hard not to create a compelling record that will appeal to a wide audience. French duo Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo) has the innate ability to produce incredible dance tracks like the late overweight comedian Chris Farley broke a sweatwith little effort. Homework, the group's groundbreaking debut, established Bangalter and Christo as potential messiahs in the multicultural world of club music. Daft Punk's long-awaited follow-up, Discovery, once again delivers unique party-ready tunes and enough dance singles ("Crescendolls" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger") to keep fans at bay, just in case the act decides to take another four year hiatus.
The album begins with "One More Time," a feel good dance track that features pop vocalist Romanthony. The song paves the way for the rest of the album, which is predominately an up-beat journey through house, disco, funk, and techno. It also shows off the many ways Daft Punk can convolute sounds into its own twisted vision. Throughout the record, analogue synthesizers, heavily-filtered samples, and vocoder-affected vocals string together the fourteen tracks in a unified theme. Unfortunately, that theme becomes a bit redundant after the first eight tracks. Even though Daft Punk changes things up midway though with the downtempo "Something About Us," there seems to be something lacking about the minimalist production that defines Discovery.
Because of the club-oriented nature of the songs on Discovery, many of the tracks don't fare as well in the CD format. The true genius of Daft Punk cannot be realized until the songs are put up against other dance tracks, at which point one will find the quality and danceablity of the tunes ranks high amongst other music of the genre. Critics who love experimentation and innovation may not find much worth in the material, but the average party-attending groove-aholic will come to the conclusion that Daft Punk still creates excellent dance music. With Discovery, Daft Punk holds tight to the feel-good vibes and positive energy that has taken its art to world wide recognition.
