DJ Clue - The Professional Pt. 2 (Roc-A-Fella)

In order to be a successful mixtape artist, one must possess the total package. The beats have to be fresh, the MCs must be hot, and the tracks…well, you can't just pump the same tracks everyone else already has. Since 1990, DJ Clue has dropped mixes on the greater New York area with more success than any other independent DJ. Clue is the master of acquiring exclusive material for the purposes of a mixtape, bolstering his tapes with select singles and freestyle offerings from a Who's Who of the hip-hop world. Last year's platinum-selling The Professional Pt. 1 compilation made DJ Clue's name synonymous nationwide with hard beats and dance floor gems. That breakthrough album's follow-up, The Professional Pt. 2, offers more of the same—a rack of exclusives from brand name artists, with Clue's signature voice carrying over each track at just the right time to hype his audio party.

On The Professional Pt. 2, DJ Clue teams up with producer Duro to provide beats for most of the album's guest artists. Showing his versatility as both DJ and producer, Clue maintains a consistent feel throughout the album. Method Man, Eminem, Trick Daddy, Busta Rhymes, Lil' Kim, and of course, the Roc-A-Fella Records family all make contributions, most notably on "Change the Game (Remix)," which features West Coast powerhouses Daz and Kurupt in a flurry of intense, bi-coastal tongue-lashing. Nas, Redman, and Mobb Deep also make their presence felt, making up for mediocre outings by Foxy Brown, Memphis Bleek, and the always shaky Capone N Noreaga.

DJ Clue has always stayed ahead of the game with his mixes; The Professional Pt. 2 is no different, in this respect. The unfortunate side of this second album is that Clue, like many others, doesn't attempt to bring anything groundbreaking to the table. All the guest artists spit rhymes verse-by-verse, with little one-two rhyming or collaboration on hooks. The loops, while tight at the beginning of each track, don't change much, and become redundant midway through the tunes. Then again, Clue tapes aren't meant for enjoying in the comfort of your home, or, for that matter, analyzing under the scrutiny of the critical microscope. They are meant to blast through big bottom-end systems in the car or 30,000-watt speakers in the dance club. One thing is for sure, though: this DJ has a Clue about how to move a crowd.
